We found that BNP and Nt‐proBNP concentrations were also substantially higher after weight loss surgery, both before and after saline infusion. We did not observe an acute rise in BNP or Nt‐proBNP in the first 3 hours after the saline infusion. An Australian-owned obesity drug, developed by Melbourne-based biotechnology company Metabolic Pharmaceuticals Limited, is set to enter final human trials next year after successfully completing a Phase 2b human trial which proved that the drug induces weight loss and is very well tolerated with no evidence of the side effects commonly experienced with existing obesity drugs.

AOD9604: AOD9604 is a synthetic peptide taken orally. The small peptide mimics a section of the growth hormone molecule which increases fat metabolism and decreases the production of fat. AOD9604 is claimed to reduce fat, increase muscle mass and possibly help recover from joint cartilage damage. However, there is currently no published human data to support these claims. AOD9604 is not approved for human use, but is used in sport for weight loss and muscle enhancement and the perception that it helps recover from tissue damage. No significant adverse effects have been reported yet, but AOD9604 is now prohibited by WADA.
Whilst not illegal to buy AOD9604 in Australia, AOD9604 does not have approval by the TGA, which means it is not allowed to be sold on the basis of it having any pharmaceutical or performance enhancing benefits. It has not been approved by any pharmaceutical authority worldwide, except for the previously mentioned "Generally Regarded As Safe" designation by the FDA. Thirty-two rabbits were divided into 4 equal groups. Four different solutions, including saline, HA, AOD9604, and AOD9604 with HA, were injected in each group on a weekly basis for 4–7 weeks after the first collagenase injection. Group 1 received intra-articular saline injection (0.6 mL). Group 2 received intra-articular HA, (Hyruan-plus®; LG Life Science, Daejeon, Korea) injection (6 mg). The molecular weight of HA was measured at 3.0×106 Da, and it was prepared to a 10 mg/mL concentration. Group 3 received intra-articular AOD9604 (Metabolic pharmaceuticals, Melbourne, Australia) injection (0.25 mg per 0.6 mL). Group 4 received combined intra-articular AOD9604 (0.25 mg) and HA (6 mg) injections. All injections were administered by a physiatrist, using a commercially available ultrasound system with 3–12 MHz multi-frequency linear transducer (E-CUBE 15®; Alpionion Medical Systems, Seoul, Korea) under general anesthesia and under sterile conditions (Figure 1). No medication was administered after the injection. The rabbits were euthanized by CO inhalation 9 weeks after the first collagenase injection (Figure 2).
